MEDIA RELEASE 2012-3 – Ham Radio Operators Prepare to Support Manitoba Marathon

2012-06-14

Winnipeg 14 JUN 2012 – Over eighty-five Amateur Radio Operators and supporting personnel will be providing volunteer communications support for the Manitoba Marathon this Sunday. Amateur Radio Operators have been involved in the Manitoba Marathon for more than thirty-two (32) years.

The Manitoba Marathon is the largest scheduled annual Amateur Radio activity in Manitoba. Every Ham Radio club and organization in the Winnipeg area is involved. This reflects the large public service component of the hobby which includes providing emergency communications in times of natural disasters and in the event of the failure of the regular communication facilities. Ham Radio operators have provided this essential service for everything from local flooding and fibre-optic cable cuts to earthquakes in New Zealand and tsunamis in Japan.

Amateur Radio Operators will be stationed at almost every Hospitality Station along the race route as well as staffing a number of course vehicles including those providing mobile medical communications.
